Part coach, part psychologist:
Prior to the
start of the Class A girls race, Marian Central Catholic
coach Tom Van Daele noticed
his fifth runner, Brynne Salomone, was getting a little emotional
because she hadn't seen
her parents yet.
"She asked me if I could find them, and I'm thinking, 'How am
I going to find these two
people among 5,000 fans,'" Van Daele said.
At the first turn of the race, Van Daele could tell Salomone still was
not at her best. So, he
yelled out some instructions.
And a little white lie.
"I told her not to be so stiff and to drop her arms,"
said Van Daele with a laugh.
"I also said I had talked to her
parents and we all wanted
her to just relax."
Salomone finished 35th and Marian Central Catholic went on
to win its first team title.
The
only problem...Van Daele never found Salomone's parents.
"I knew they were there somewhere," Van Daele said.
"She asked me why I did
that, and
I told her because she was running a crummy race
and I wanted us to win."
